BOXSCORE 2 FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State's bid to split a doubleheader Saturday with New Paltz came down to the final outs of the second game.
After dropping the opener of the SUNYAC doubleheader, 5-2, the Blue Devils entered the last of the seventh of the second game trailing 6-2 after leading 2-0 early.
Jamie Atkins lined a single down the line in left and
Anne Wasik was hit by a pitch to start the Fredonia State seventh. An error loaded the bases before
Alyssa Morgan dropped a two-run single to center.
New Paltz head coach
Tony Ciccarello changed pitchers, replacing starter Katie Rutcofsky with Erika Traina with the bases loaded and no outs. Traina issued a walk to re-load the bases, then
Megan Medina delivered an RBI single to cut Fredonia State's deficit to one run.
Traina induced the next two batters to pop out before recording a strikeout for the final out and earning a save in the Hawks' 6-5 win.
The loss dropped the Blue Devils to 4-10 overall and 1-3 in the SUNYAC. New Paltz improved to 11-4 overall and 4-0 in the conference.
Morgan led the Fredonia State attack with three hits while Medina,
Katie Bartkowiak, and
Tina Schwartzmeyer had one RBI each.
Raela Wiley-Delp was the losing pitcher. She allowed two runs on five hits over the first five innings.
Marissa Monaco led New Paltz's 11-hit attack with a solo homer and two doubles. Shayna Burgess and Chelsea Kull also had three hits, and Jordan Fiore had two hits.
New Paltz also rallied from a 2-0 deficit in Saturday's first game. The Hawks scored single runs in the third and fourth innings before Kull broke the 2-2 tie with a two-run homer in the fifth inning.
The Blue Devils scored both their runs in the second inning. Included in the scoring was a double by Medina, a single by Schwartzmeyer, an RBI single by
Corinne Christie, and a double steal in which Schwartzmeyer stole home.
Medina had two hits in the opener while Andrea Freeney had two hits for New Paltz. Shelp was the losing pitcher. Amber Carozza a pitched a complete-game eight-hitter to get the win.
The Blue Devils are back in action Thursday when they entertain Pitt-Bradford.
