GENESEO, N.Y. -- Fredonia State won the draw and scored on the first possession of sudden death overtime to defeat Geneseo, 15-14, in a SUNYAC road game Tuesday.
Amy Simon (Amherst) scored the game-winner at 36 seconds into the second extra session. It was her seventh goal of the game to go along with three groundballs and two caused turnovers.
Katie Kleine (Cazenovia) was Fredonia State's top scorer with three goals and six assists, while
Karli Brinthaupt (Horseheads) forced overtime and then double-overtime with her second and third goals of the game.
In goal,
Casey Chiesa (Baldwinsville) made 12 saves, including one late in the final seconds of overtime to preserve a 12-12 tie. Geneseo's Julie Bernatzky also came up with three big saves late in regulation with the score still tied. She was credited with 11 saves overall.
The Blue Devils held the largest lead by either team, 6-3, during the first half before Geneseo closed to within 6-5 at halftime. The Blue Knights took the momentum into the second half and opened an 11-9 lead before the Blue Devils won two straight draw controls and converted them into goals in a span of 35 seconds for an 11-11 tie.
Geneseo regained the lead, 12-11, before Brinthaupt tallied the final goal of the second half with just over two minutes left in regulation. She also scored the final goal of the first overtime to erase a 14-13 Geneseo lead.
Other top field players for the Blue Devils were
Megan Mietelski (Fairport) and
Cortney Ciaschi (Ithaca) with four and three draw controls, respectively. Chiesa led the Blue Devils with four groundballs.
The Blue Devils improved to 8-2 overall and 2-0 in the SUNYAC heading into a conference home game at 1 p.m. Saturday against Oneonta, which is like the Blue Devils and Cortland is unbeaten in SUNYAC play. Oneonta is currently 8-0 overall and received votes in the most recent national NCAA Division III rankings.
