BOXSCORE GRANTHAM, Pa. -- The Fredonia State Blue Devils fell to 1-1 with a 17-8 road loss to nationally ranked Messiah in NCAA Division III women's lacrosse Saturday afternoon.
The Blue Devils yielded the first nine goals of the game before scoring goals by junior
Rachael Reinis (Webster) and senior
Amy Simon (Amherst).
Simon scored the next three goals to cut the Messiah lead to 9-5. The Falcons, ranked No. 12 and No. 13, respectively, in the U.S. Lacrosse and IWLCA preseason polls, scored a goal just ahead of the halftime horn, followed by the first three goals of the second half to halt the Blue Devil comeback effort.
Simon finished with five goals, Reinis with two, and senior
Morgan McNamara (Oswego) and freshman
Katie Glagolev (Webster) with one each. Reinis also added an assist. Junior goalkeeper
Casey Chiesa (Baldwinsville) was credited with seven saves. The Blue Devils were outshot 35-19.
Field leaders were Chiesa with five caused turnovers, Simon with three draw controls, senior
Megan Mietelski (Fairport) with three draw controls and two caused turnovers, and sophomore
Katie Kleine (Cazenovia) with two groundballs..
Rachel Dirksen had six goals and one assist to lead Messiah.
The Blue Devils return to action next Friday a 11:30 a.m. when they meet Bridgewater State in Spring Fling 2012 at West Palm Beach, Fla.
