BOXSCORE 1 FREDONIA, N.Y. – Fredonia State pitchers domiated the Oneonta batters in limiting the Red Dragons to just two runs to fashion a doubleheader sweep of Oneonta at Ludwig Field on Saturday.

The Blue Devils won the first game as Sean Larson (Angola) and Zachary Jordon (Akron) combined on a six-hitter. In the second game, freshman lefthander Steve Ramsdell (North East, Pa.) scattered five hits in a complete-game victory.

Fredonia State improved to 7-9 overall and 3-2 in the SUNYAC with the sweep, while Oneonta fell to 6-6 overall and 0-2 in the SUNYAC. The teams conclude the series with a single game Sunday starting at noon on Ludwig Field.

The doubleheader was a case of missed opportunities for both teams, yet not before the Blue Devils struck for two runs in the first inning of Game 1. Connor Lorenzo (Rochester) led off the inning with a single and scored when Dan Fetes (Webster) doubled under the glove of the centerfielder on a diving try in the gap to left-center. Fetes then scored on a safety squeeze bunt by clean-up hitter Dillon Lowe (Pittsford).

The Blue Devils added an insurance run in the third inning off losing pitcher Chris Tyson. Dan Greco (Lockport) doubled, advanced on a single by Sean Urckfitz (Penfield), and scored on a sacrifice fly by John Bennett (Churchville).

Larson walked the tight rope in four of the five innings he pitched yet kept pitching out of jams. He pitched around two walks in the first inning and escaped a bases-loaded jam in the third when Oneonta's Kevin Knack lined into a double play. Oneonta's Matt Salvatore doubled to lead off the fourth and advanced to third with one out before he was stranded.

The Red Dragons broke through for one run in the top of the fifth. Rob Peluso doubled with one out, advanced to third when a nubber between the pitcher's mound and first base resulted in an error, and scored on a wild pitch. After a hit-batsman put runners at first and third, Larson blew a fastball by the next hitter to escape further trouble.

Larson gave way to Jordon in the top of the sixth and the Red Dragons mounted yet another threat. With runners at first and second and one out, Jonathan Silva grounded to Lowe at third. Lowe stepped on the bag for the second out, then overthrew first. As Fetes ran down the ball behind first and relayed it home, both Oneonta runners ended up at third. The trailing runner was tagged out to end the inning.

The Red Dragons put runners on first and second in the seventh. Like Larson before him, Jordon wriggled free when Urckfitz snared a sinking liner down the line in left for the second out and Fetes smothered a grounder at the bag at first for the final out.

Oneonta left 10 runners on base in the first game and nine more in the second game. Ramsdell made big pitches when needed most, especially in the sixth inning.  The Red Dragons had runners on second and third when Knack was intentionally walked to load the bases with two outs. Ramsdell froze the next batter with an off-speed pitch for strike three.

On the other hand, the Blue Devils rapped out 14 hits -- two each by Lorenzo, Fetes, Lowe, and Urckfitz and three by Brian Sheehan (West Seneca). Yet they could only muster one run through the first seven innings, a two-out single by Greco in the third inning.

Oneonta got that run right back in the top of the fourth when Knack walked with two outs, stole second, and scored on a double by Salvatore.

The Blue Devils broke the game open with five runs in the last of the eighth inning. Urckfitz, Alex Foster (Wellsville), Lorenzo, and Jake Nowak (Depew) were credited with RBI during the uprising.
