BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State women dropped down two spots into third place while the men are fifth after Day 2 of the SUNYAC Swimming and Diving championship meet at the Flickinger Center.
The top finish of the day was by junior
Stephanie Andrasek (Parma, Ohio), who was narrowly defeated in the women's 100-yard breast stroke. Cortland's Michaela Sure touched out in 1:07.43 and Andrasek was one-tenth of one second behind in second place. Andrasek's time of 1:07.53 broke her own school record which she set during preliminaries Thursday (1:08.48).
Andrasek was also part of another record Friday. She swam the second leg of the women's 200-yard medley relay, which finished fourth in 1:49.74. Other members of the quartet were freshman
Camille Follman (Salamanca), junior
Elizabeth Schake (Churchville), and freshman
Ellie Brion (Canandaigua).
Lizzie Lodinsky set a new mark in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:58.19, then repeated the time in the finals to finish sixth. Jennifer Smith (Pen Argyl, Pa.), a sophomore and previous record-holder, was eighth with a time of 1:59.60 after going 1:58.70 during prelims.
Ginty, Lodinsky, Smith, and sophomore
Kristen Champoux (Niagara Falls) combined for a school record in the 800-yard freestyle, a 7:58.85 clocking.
Courtney Schmidt (Portville), a junior, set the women's other school record Friday with a 4:49.89 in the 400-yard individual medley finals after going four seconds slower during preliminaries. Schmidt was 11th in the event.
Schake finished fourth in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 59.38 seconds.
Four women earned points in the 100-yard backtstroke. Follman was fourth (1:00.96), freshman Steph Rose (Phillipsburg, N.J.) fifth (1:01.24), junior
Emily Ginty (Chenango Forks) 11th, and freshman
Breonna Henningham (Clarence) 15th.
On the men's side:
John Estanislau's 51.38 in the 100-yard butterfly earned him the second seed going into the finals. The previous record was held by Shawn Erb, who was clocked in 52.13 seconds in 1989. On Thursday, Estanislau broke Erb's 50-yard freestyle record, also set in 1989. Estainslau's new mark is 21.19 seconds compared to Erb's best of 21.33.
Also, sophomore
Eric Jordan (Lancaster) was seventh and sophomore
Andrew Case (Clarence Center) 11th in the men's 100-yard breast stroke. Jordan touched out in 53.33 seconds.
The Blue Devil women, bolstered by an outstanding day in the diving well, ended Day 1 atop the nine-team standings but will not earn additional diving points until Saturday night when the 1-meter championship is contested. They had six women in the finals of Thursday's 3-meter event, won by junior
Sarah Ficarro (Owego).
The same held true for the men, who had three divers in the top eight of the 1-meter championship Thursday, including SUNYAC champ
Ryan Fuller (Endicott), also a junior. The 3-meter finals are Saturday night.
