ONEONTA, N.Y.—The Fredonia State Blue Devils learned from their two losses this season and figured out how to win a close game as they took down Oneonta State 13-11 on Saturday.
The Blue Devils record improves to 2-1 in the SUNYAC and 9-2 overall. The Red Dragons fell to 1-2 in the SUNYAC and 1-9 overall.
The Blue Devils' two losses this season have been by a combined five goals. Coach
Chris Case credited his team with taking control of the close game situation and shutting down the Red Dragons in the final minutes to take the victory.
After falling behind 1-0 in the early moments of the game, Wingerden netted three consecutive goals to put the Blue Devils ahead. Oneonta scored the next five goals, but Fredonia State eventually tied the game at six all heading into halftime.
The second half proved to be a back and forth struggle. After trailing 8-7, the Blue Devils scored three straight goals to make the score 10-8. The Blue Devils defense buckled down over the last five minutes of the game and halted any chance of a Red Dragons comeback.
Casey Chiesa came up clutch with just under a minute to play, making a huge save on a free position shot at the 29:29 mark of the second half. Chiesa finished the game with nine saves.
Rebecca Monteith contributed five goals for the Red Dragons. Heidi Kissinger and Caroline Tulley each had two goals and Annelise Muscietta made five saves in net.
Fredonia State hosts Buffalo State on April 12 at 4 p.m. at University Stadium in a SUNYAC matchup. The Blue Devils and Bengals are both tied for third place in the SUNYAC along with Brockport.
