FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Senior
Andy Dlugosz spun a five-hit shutout as the Fredonia State Blue Devils split with Utica College on Saturday. Utica took the opener, 8-7.
Dlugosz allowed a hit in the third, two in the fourth and two in the fifth. He walked two and struck out five in earning his third win of the season.
Offensively, the big blow for the Devils was a
Dillon Lowe bases-loaded double in the fifth.
The Devils got on board in the third following a walk to
Joe Kephart, a single by
Kody Hoth, a sac bunt and a sac fly by Tommy Dee.
The Devils got two more in the fourth. Following a pair of leadoff walks.
Jake Nowak and
Brian Sheehan executed a double steal. Nowak scored on a wild pitch, and Kephart singled home Sheehan.
John Messina added a pair of hits for the Devils.
In game one, Utica scored four first-inning runs on four hits and an error.
The Devils answered with three in the bottom of the second.
Andy Dlugosz and
Joe Kephart hit back-to-back doubles. Dlugosz fell rounding third base. Hoth then ripped a single to plate both.
Dan Greco and Messina both singled to plate Hoth, making it a 4-3 game.
Hoth gave the Devils a 5-4 lead with a two-run homerun in the fourth. Messina would double, steal third and score on the catcher's errant throw to make it 6-4.
The Devils final run came on a Dlugosz homerun in the fifth as the Devils took a 7-4 lead.
Utica scored four in the seventh to secure the win. After a groundout, a single, walk and single loaded the bases. A Blue Devil error plated the first run. Chris Podlucky hit a sacrifice fly to make it 7-6. Two more walks loaded the bases. Bob Choleva then singled in two runs to give Utica an 8-7 lead.
The Devils would end the game with runners on second and third.
The Devils now stand at 9-7. They play host to Hilbert on Sunday. Due to Hilbert's field being unplayable, the Devils will be the visiting team.
