Red Dragons take two from Blue Devils

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State Blue Devils dropped a pair of home games Friday against Cortland, 9-5 and 10-7.

The Blue Devils managed six hits in each game at a windy Ludwig Field. Taylor Gahagen collected three hits, including a home run in game one, three RBI and two runs in the two games.

Matt Sullivan took the loss in game one, and Angelo Sciandra was the losing pitcher in Game 2.
 
Aaron Schuldt and Travis Ratliff, who was recently named National Pitcher of the Week after a no-hitter, earned the victories for Cortland.

Gahagen's home run came on a 2-2 pitch in the first inning to tie the game at one. Schuldt then retired 10 of the next 11 batters. After a pair of hits, the Blue Devils went down 1-2-3 in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings.

The Blue Devils put together two runs in the bottom of the ninth, but could not come any closer.
Brian Sheehan recorded two hits, including a double and also scored a run. Gahagen finished Game 1 with two hits and two runs. Joe Kephart and Ron Mannella each scored a run for Fredonia State.

The Red Dragons jumped out to four quick runs in the top of the first inning off of Sciandra and two more in the top of the second off of Dan Greco.

Fredonia State scored three runs in the fifth. A Jake Nowak sacrifice fly scored Dan Fetes. Gahagen connected for a single to score Alex Foster and Tom Dee.

Trailing 10-5 in the bottom of the seventh, Fetes came through with a two-run double two score Kephart and Gahagen to make it 10-7. The Blue Devils left two runners on base to end the game.
Dee finished game two with three walks, a single, two runs and one RBI. Fetes had two hits in the game to go with his two RBI.

For the Red Dragons, John Adornetto had two hits and three runs in game one, and two more runs in the second game. Nick Thode collected four hits in game two and also scored twice.

Fredonia State is now 1-10 in the SUNYAC and and 12-12 overall. Cortland, who as of April 10 was ranked no. 12 in Division III, improves to 10-1 in the SUNYAC and 21-6 overall. The Red Dragons are tied for first in the conference with Oneonta State.

Fredonia State will play one more game against Cortland this weekend. The Blue Devils and Red Dragons square off at Ludwig Field on Sunday at noon in a nine-inning matchup.
