FREDONIA, N.Y. -- A change of scenery did the Fredonia State baseball team well, as it claimed its first conference win of the year, a 5-2 victory over Brockport. The Devils had opened conference play with eight straight road games.
Senior right-hander
Jordan Hibbard turned in another strong performance, tossing 6 1/3 innings of no-hit ball before yielding two runs in the seventh.
Angelo Sciandra got the final two outs of the inning, before turning things over to
Andy Dlugosz for the two-inning save.
The Devils opened the scoring with a leadoff double by Dlugosz. He was sacrificed to third, and scored on a groundout.
The Devils tacked on two more in the third.
Dillon Lowe led off with a single.
Alex Foster followed with a double to put runners at second and third.
Jon Messina then lined an 0-2 pitch into center to score Lowe.
Foster would score on an infield hit by Tommy Dee. Messina would score the third run of the inning when Brockport rightfielder Steve Boronczyk dropped a slicing fly ball for an error.
The Devils took a 4-0 lead into the seventh.
After retiring the first batter, Hibbard yielded three straight hits to Boronczyk, Mike DeGregory and Tom McCormick. McCormick's single plated the first run.
The Devils summond Sciandra from the pen. Mike Goldstein greeted him with a single to make it a 5-2 game. The Devils would escape without further damage.
The Devils scored the game's final run when
Joe Kephart was hit by a pitch. After a strikeout, Lowe lined a ball off thirdbaseman Mike Weakley's foot. Shortstop McCormick played the rebound, but threw the ball past the firsbaseman, allowing Kephart to score.
Dlugosz packed up the final two innings, allowing two hits and striking out one for his second save.
Hibbard upped his record to 3-2. Messina, Dee and Lowe had two hits apiece for the Devils.
The Devils are now 12-12. They take on Cortland in a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Ludwig Field on Friday. The weekend series was moved up one day to accomodate the weather.
