MORRISVILLE, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State hockey team ended its regular season in style, picking up an overtime road win at the expense of Morrisville.
Mat Hehr scored on a power play goal 1:26 into overtime to give the Devils a 6-5 victory in a wild game.
The Devils took 50 shots on goal and Morrisville 36. The two teams combined for 21 power play opportunities and 93 minutes of penalties. Seven goals were scored on power plays, with one coming shorthanded.
Morrisville State scored the first three goals of the game to take a commanding lead over the Devils, only to see it dwindle. The teams eventually took a 5-all tie into overtime before Hehr connected on the game winner.
Morrisville had two power play scores late in the first period. Rob Sgarbossa scored with 1:26 left to play. The Mustangs upped the lead to 2-0 just 26 seconds later as Derek Matheson scored.
Morrisville made it 3-0 at 1:37 into the second period.
The Devils responded with three-straight goals of their own.
Brett Mueller, Ross and
Billy Sanborn each scored in a busy second period. Mueller's goal came at even strength. Ross scored on a power play and Sanborn converted a short-handed goal to tie the game at 3-all.
Late in the second, Morrisville's Matheson scored again on a power play to put the Mustangs back on top, 4-3. The teams combined for five goals in the second period.
The third period saw the Devils score the first two goals and take their first lead of the game. Hehr scored on a power play to tie the game at 4-all. Ross connected midway through the period to give the Devils a 5-4 lead.
With just 2:46 left in regulation, Morrisville's Tyler Swan tied the game on a power play goal.
Fredonia State's
Mark Friesen made 31 saves in earning the win. Caylin Relkoff made 44 stops in absorbing the loss.
Morrisville falls to 11-12-1 overall and 8-7-1 in the SUNYAC. The Devils stand at 12-12-1, and 7-8-1 in the conference.
The Devils advance to the SUNYAC Tournament as the No. 6 seed. They will travel to No. 4 seed Buffalo State in the first round. The teams split a pair of regular-season match ups. Morrisville will be the No. 5 seed.
