FREDONIA, N.Y. — New Paltz kept its SUNYAC playoff hopes alive Friday with a 2-1 double-overtime win over Fredonia State at University Stadium.
The Hawks improved to 7-8-1 overall and 3-4-1 SUNYAC to move within two points of the sixth-place Blue Devils, who fell to 11-6-0 overall and 4-4-0 in the SUNYAC.
New Paltz visits Buffalo State while the Blue Devils are at home vs. Oneonta at 1 p.m. Saturday. The Blue Devils may need a win to earn a post-season berth, but could still get in with a tie or a New Paltz loss.
The Blue Devils took a 1-0 lead Friday on an own goal in the 68th minute. Sophomore forward/midfielder Luke Tylutki overtook one Hawk defender, cut in, and fired a low shot from the right wing. The ball deflected off the back leg of a New Paltz defender and Hawk goalkeeper Andres Montoya was unable to change direction fast enough before the ball trickled over the goal line.
The Hawks forged a 1-1 tie in the 83rd minute on a goal by senior forward Jimmy Altadonna. Senior midfielder Joe Emberger set up Altadonna after he ran in an open space.
The game-winning goal came in the second overtime. With the Hawks pressing up, Emberger took control of the ball and slid the ball between two defenders. Santalesa struck a left-footed shot just inside the right post.
The Blue Devils were outshot 31-13. Senior goalkeeper Bobby McGinnis made eight saves. Montoya made two saves for New Paltz.
