NEW PALTZ, N.Y. -- Fredonia State's furious comeback attempt fell short Saturday in a 101-95 SUNYAC loss at New Paltz.
The Blue Devils trailed 80-63 with 6:30 remaining, yet battled back to within one possession, 97-94, with :12 seconds left on a three-pointer by Joseph Monahan. With the Blue Devils forced to foul, New Paltz made 4 of 4 from the line to put the game out of reach.
Monahan led the comeback with a career-high 30 points, with 21 in the second half. Four other Blue Devils reached double-figures: Branden McKenney with 14, Leonard Smith 13, and Curtis Fluker and Damien Goodwin II 11 points. Smith also had a game-high six assists.
The Hawks (6-4 overall, 2-2 SUNYAC) built a 52-40 lead at halftime on 19 of 26 from the field (73.1 percent). They were 7 of 8 on three-pointers. The Blue Devils tried to keep pace from beyond the arc -- 9 of 17 in the game, compared to 9 of 14 by the Hawks.
Shareef Taylor finished with 24 points to lead New Paltz.
