FREDONIA, N.Y. –
Julie LaPolla (Penfield) scored her second game-winning goal in as many days as Fredonia State outlasted the Oswego Lakers, 4-3, in SUNYAC women's soccer.
LaPolla, a senior forward, scored her fifth goal of the season in the fourth minute of overtime with a short chip from inside the goalkeeper's box. Junior midfielder
Emily Beh (Penfield) was credited with an assist for her crossing pass into the box to set up LaPolla.
The pass appeared to heading out-of-bounds but glided back into the field, where LaPolla managed to get off her shot despite being closely marked.
The rest of the Blue Devil scoring belonged to freshman forward
Taylor Wingerden (Macedon/Palmyra-Macedon). She had three goals, two in the first half, but each time Oswego countered with goals – two by freshman forward Nikka Liadka (Liverpool).
It was the second win in two days for the Blue Devils, who improved to 2-3 in the SUNYAC and 7-6 overall. The Blue Devils nipped Cortland, 1-0, on Friday on a late goal by LaPolla.
The Lakers fell to 0-5 in the conference and 5-7 overall.
The teams traded goals in the first half. Wingerden got it started with a free kick from just outside the 18-yard line at 4:06. Oswego's Brittany Williams (Massapequa) countered at 21:25 following a teammate's corner kick and a bobble around the box.
The next two goals -- just 12 seconds apart -- got their genesis in the midfield. First, Wingerden gathered in a loose ball near the center stripe, circled left around the Oswego defense, and fired a high arcing shot into the far right corner. The teams returned to the center stripe whereupon Liadka got the ball, dribbled through the Blue Devil defense, and chipped in a shot from just outside the goalkeeper's box.
Times of the offsetting goals were 30:05 and 30:17, respectively.
Wingerden and Liadka traded goals in the second half, too. Wingerden netted her third goal of the game – and team-leading ninth of the season -- at 50:53 when she fired from the left wing and her shot glanced off the far post and into the net. Liadka's second goal of the game – and team-leading eighth of the year – came at 73:39 after she dribbled through the Blue Devil defense and took a short shot with Blue Devils in either side.
The Blue Devils averted a potential Oswego go-ahead goal with 2:36 left in regulation when Liadka, set up perfectly by a teammate, fired over the top of the net from point-blank range. It was the last of 19 shots taken by the Lakers, 13 of which made their way onto the net. Fredonia State freshman goalkeeper
Kayleigh Forger (Rochester/Churchville-Chili) was credited with 10 saves.
Oswego sophomore keeper Christina Fregosi (Massapequa) had five saves.
Fredonia State plays its next four games on the road, all against SUNYAC opponents, starting next Friday at Potsdam. Oswego is back in action Tuesday at St. Lawrence.
