BROCKPORT, N.Y. -- Brockport kept its playoff chances alive while Fredonia State's chances were diminished Friday.
Sarah Lawson took over Brockport's single-season assist record as her team emerged with a 1-0 victory over the Blue Devils in a State University of New York Athletic Conference game Friday afternoon on A. Huntley Parker Jr. Field in Brockport.
The Blue Devils fell to 3-5 in the conference and 8-8 overall. They need a victory Saturday at Geneseo and some help in order to make the six-tournament field.
The Golden Eagles improved to 7-7 overall. They are also 3-5 in the conference and can capture the sixth seed in the SUNYAC Tournament with a win over Buffalo State and a Fredonia win over Geneseo. That would created a three-way tie, including Geneseo. Brockport holds the tiebreaker in that event.
Jess Bush scored the only goal of the game in the 30th minute. A corner kick by Lawson was cleared out of the box and back to the corner of the field where Lawson sent the ball back into the box and Bush knocked it in for her fifth goal of the season. The assist was Lawson's 13th of the season setting the new school record for assists in a season.
Brockport's defense kept SUNYAC's second-leading scorer
Taylor Wingerden, who has 10 goals this season, at bay with just three shots. Wingerden had a chance to tie the game midway through the second half with a shot from the front the top of the 18-yard box was headed for the top of the goal, but Brockport goalie Erin Asquith punched the ball over the crossbar and out of danger.
The Blue Devils had two immediate chances afterward to tie it. The ensuing corner kick after Asquith's save resulted in a shot from in close and a second shot by the Blue Devils sailed wide.
Asquith finished with seven saves and the offense outshot Fredonia State, 22-11. Blue Devil keeper
Kayleigh Forger was credited with 14 saves.
