Hess, a senior from Newark, N.Y., broke a 32-year-old school record while competing Feb. 21 in the Marc Deneault Invitational at Cornell. Finishing second in a field including many NCAA Division 1 runners, Hess covered the 3,000 meters in 8:30.02. The previous fastest Blue Devil in the event was Kevin Rumsey, who went 8:30.24 during the 1983 season.
