FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Four Fredonia State Blue Devils were Monday named recipients of SUNYAC weekly awards in their respective sports.
They are women's basketball player
Becky Hebert, men's hockey players
Bryan Ross and
Mark Friesen, and women's diver
Sarah Ficarro.
Here is a look at each student-athlete's achievement as provided by the SUNYAC:
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Becky Hebert (Hilton, NY/Hilton), sophomore guard/forward
A sophomore guard forward, Hebert was instrumental in Fredonia State going 2-0 last week in league play as the Blue Devils continue to battle for a post-season berth. Hebert produced a double-double in the 73-60 win over Plattsburgh on Friday night, finishing with 19 points and 10 rebounds to go along with three steals. Saturday afternoon she finished with 20 points and six rebounds in the 66-55 win over Potsdam. She has scored double digits in every game she has played this season (13) as she leads the conference with 21.2 points per game.
MEN'S ICE HOCKEY PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Bryan Ross (Livonia, MI), senior forward
Ross assisted both game-winning goals on the weekend as Fredonia State won two conference games to move up in the league standings. Friday night he assisted on the game-winning goal early in the third period and scored an insurance goal into empty net vs. Brockport. Saturday he assisted on the game-winning goal early in the third period vs. Geneseo. Ross has tallied at least a point in the last four games for the Blue Devils and moves up into seventh spot in Fredonia State's all-time career scoring list with 127 points.
MEN'S ICE HOCKEY GOALTENDER OF THE WEEK
Mark Friesen (Calgary, Alberta), sophomore
Friesen earns his second straight Goalie of the Week honor after posting two SUNYAC wins at home against Brockport and Geneseo. With the two wins and four points the Blue Devils moved from sixth place up to a tie for third place in the conference standings. Fredonia State rallied from a two-goal deficit Friday night en route to a 4-2 victory over the Golden Eagles as Friesen finished with 29 saves. Friesen also made 29 saves on Saturday night against the Ice Knights in the 4-2 win. Three of the goals allowed on the weekend came on the opponents' power play as the Blue Devils were whistled for 19 penalties for 57 minutes over the two games.
WOMEN'S DIVER OF THE WEEK
Sarah Ficarro (Owego, NY/Owego), junior
Ficarro competed at Trinity University in Texas over the weekend posted two national provisional qualifying scores. Ficarro won the women's 1-meter springboard event with an 11-dive score of 463.55 and finished second in the 3-meter with 463.75 points.
The SUNYAC also made weekly awards to the top men's basketball player, the top rookie in men's hockey, the outstanding men's diver and the top swimmers in both genders, and the top runner and field performer in men's and women's track and field.
