Busy weekend at Steele Hall

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Steele Hall will be will be a hub of campus activity Friday and Saturday with home events in men's and women's swimming, men's and women's basketball, and men's hockey.

The weekend kicks off Friday afternoon when the Blue Devil swimmers will entertain the Edinboro Fighting Scots in the Natatorium starting at 3 p.m. It'll represent a step up in competition for Fredonia State; Edinboro is an NCAA Division II program.

“The teams look forward to swimming fast and prepping for championships,” head coach Arthur Wang said.

Because Edinboro does not have a diving program, the Blue Devils sought out  competition elsewhere. That led them to San Antonio, Texas, where they will compete Friday and Saturday against the Trinity Tigers. Like Fredonia State, Trinity has annually had divers qualify for the NCAA Division III championships.

The women's basketball team will pick up the pulse of the busy weekend when they face the Plattsburgh Cardinals starting at 6 p.m. Friday. The Blue Devils will also entertain the Potsdam Bears at 2 p.m. Saturday. Both are SUNYAC games.

Likewise, the Fredonia State men's basketball team has home dates with Plattsburgh (8 p.m. Friday) and Potsdam (4 p.m. Saturday). All four basketball games will be played in the Fieldhouse.

"This is a big weekend for us to move up the standings in the conference,” men's head coach Kevin Moore said. “With only nine regular season home games, it's also important for us play well at home. We have to get some confidence going early shooting the ball and play defense the way we played it in the first semester."

The weekend of activity will conclude Saturday night when the Fredonia State men's hockey team faces off against the Geneseo Ice Knights. But first, the Blue Devils have a Friday night date with the Brockport Golden Eagles. Both games begin at 7 p.m. in the Ice Arena.

“It is great to get back into the SUNYAC play,” head hockey coach Jeff Meredith said. “This weekend is a playoff weekend. We badly need these points to not only hang on to the sixth and last spot, but to move up and try to get a home ice game in the first round.  I think that both Brockport and Geneseo are in the same boat, which should make this weekend pretty exciting.”

And busy.
