As Fredonia State's first swim coach, Charles Dennis took the program from scratch to a perennial conference contender. After amassing a 49-9 record at Fredonia, he accepted a position at the United States Coast Guard Academy, where his record stood at 187-29-1 at the time of his induction. During his career as a swim coach, Mr. Dennis had produced 41 NCAA or NAIA All-Americas and his 1983 Coast Guard team finished in the Top 10 nationally by placing seventh at the NCAA Swimming & Diving championships. His combined collegiate record of 236-38-1 made him one of the most successful college swim coaches at any level. Mr. Dennis earned a Bachelor's of Science degree from Slippery Rock State College in 1958, with majors in Health and Physical Education. He also earned a master's degree in 1960 from Purdue University. While at Fredonia State, he also served as junior varsity men's soccer coach and men's head tennis coach.
