The following information was taken from the Hall of Fame program published at the time of induction. Some editing was required:
A three-time All America, twice in the 100 meters (1989, 1990) and once in the 200 meters (1990), Bret Johantgen had a brilliant career as a sprinter with the Fredonia State men's track and field team. From 1988 to 1991, Mr. Johantgen dominated the 55-, the 100-, and the 200-meter events. A five-time SUNYAC and four-time New York State Collegiate Track and Field champion, he was twice selected most valuable player of the powerful Blue Devil team. An exceptional student, he careered a 3.88 grade point average in Mathematics and was named winner of the Sam Molnar Award presented to the student-athlete judged the top scholar-athlete in the State University of New York Athletic Conference. A two-year captain (1990, 1991), Mr. Johantgen held Fredonia State outdoor records in the 100 meters (10.7 seconds) and the 200 meters (21.4 seconds) and indoor records in the 55 meters (6.47 seconds) and the 200 meters. He was awarded a prestigious NCAA post-graduate scholarship, the first Fredonia State student-athlete so honored. A 1991 graduate, he was working as an acturial specialist for the Peat Marwick Foundation in Rochester, N.Y., at the time of his induction.
